Our Lady of Sorrows | Catechism for Kids

Last week at our altar server meeting, we tried a simple activity that I really enjoyed and wanted to share here! Since we were learning about Our Lady of Sorrows, we first found and read some related Bible verses without telling the kids what feast day we were talking about. We then asked them to guess which celebration or feast the passages might be connected to.
It was quite interesting to hear their answers! Many immediately guessed Christmas or Good Friday. Of course, those were not the answer, but their guesses actually showed us something important... they were quite familiar with the main celebrations of the Church, while some of the other feast days and memorials that fall throughout the liturgical year were much less familiar to them.
After the guessing activity, we watched a short video about Our Lady of Sorrows and talked more about the meaning of the feast together.
I really liked this approach because we did not begin by simply telling them, “Today we are learning about Our Lady of Sorrows.” The Bible verses gave them an opportunity to think, guess, connect what they already knew, and become curious about the answer. Even their incorrect guesses became part of the learning process.
