In preparation for September, I have included a number of events and resources for the Season of Creation, and Truth and Reconciliation. Please see below and attached. Any questions, please don’t hesitate to let me know.

Indigenous and Catholic Ecosystems: A Path to Reconciliation

o   Saturday Sept 14, 2pm EST.

o   This discussion will look at the parallels between Indigenous Ecological Knowledge and the writings of Pope Francis in his encyclical Laudato Si’.

o   Hosted by Concerned Lay Catholics in Canada and Laudato Si’ Movement in Canada.

o   Speakers include, Elder Deacon Rennie Nahanee, Bishop Jon Hansen, Inuk Chief Ray Ruben and Fr. Toby Collins.

Indigenous Teachings Book Study

o   Participants meet online the first Monday of the month to discuss a selected book or film, with a focus on Truth and Reconciliation.

o   Facilitated by Donna McGreal

Opening of the Spirit Garden Project, Toronto

o   The Spirit Garden Project is a monument that has been constructed in Toronto’s Nathan Philips Square, to honour Residential School Survivors and Indigenous cultural heritage. It will be a space for teaching, learning, sharing and healing. https://www.councilfire.ca/spirit-garden/

o   At the centre of the Spirit Garden is a Turtle sculpture designed by an Anishinaabe artist, which identifies the names of the 17 residential schools that once operated in Ontario

o   Approximately 5 years ago, Council Fire Toronto put out a request to faith communities and government to contribute funding to this project, and fulfill Action 82 of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. The Diocese of Hamilton was one of many who responded to provide funding.

o   The opening will be part of the annual Indigenous Legacy Gathering taking place from September 27-30, 2024 at Nathan Philips Square.
